By ADAM IHUCHA -- RwandAir plans to boost its presence
in Tanzania as it set to increase its flight schedule in the northern part of
the country next month.
The Rwanda’s state-owned-carrier says that from March
30, 2014, its frequency from Kigali to Kilimanjaro airport (KIA) will increase
from three to four times per week.
Northern zone airline manager Thomson Byarushengo
announced here at the weekend that the Rwandan carrier would be operating on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
“Our expansion is out of opportunity and necessity to
cater for tourists and East African community delegates to Kigali,” Mr
Byarushengo explained.
The RwandAir senior manager for EA region and
beyond, Ms Alice Katiti told the airline travel agents and tour operators in
northern Tanzania that the airline expects to receive a brand new Q400 aircraft
from Bombardier on 24, March 2014, to cater for domestic and regional routes.
In April 2013, RwandAir placed an order valued
at nearly $33 million to purchase the Q400 NextGen turboprop airliner from
Canadian manufacturer firm, Bombardier Aerospace.
“Our 67-seat, dual-class Q400 NextGen aircraft
will ensure RwandAir is well positioned to offer increased capacity on popular
routes that are being opened and serviced with our 37-seat Bombardier Dash
8-200 aircraft,” Ms Katiti said.
Ms Katiti said that the Q400 NextGenturboprop is the
right aircraft to develop their domestic and regional market and to firmly
support RwandAir on its path towards growth and increased profitability.
The Bombardier Q-400 NextGen will operate on
Brazzaville, Libreville, Entebbe, Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, Bujumbura, Dar es
Salaam, Mombasa and Kamembe the only domestic route.
