‘Communication With a Purpose’ Flies high Habari Maalum Star

By ADAM IHUCHA--Innovation has started paying dividends at Habari Maalum College (HMC), as the learning institution has been exporting tailor-made media courses overseas for three years now.

HMC Public Relations and Marketing officer, Emmy Kimaro says export does mean physically shipping the course materials abroad, but it means attracting foreigner students, who actually come to learn and take the knowledge with them.

One of the latest well-packaged courses the Arusha-based college to export to media students in African and European countries was ‘Communication with a Purpose’.

“Besides shedding light on communication skills and how to compose the best message with calculated positive impact to the audience, the course module is also flying the Tanzania’s flag higher” Ms Kimaro notes.

HMC, which offers media and leadership courses, attracted a dozen of students in pursuit of a diploma course in journalism from as far as Sweden last week.

Ida Anderson, one of the Swedish students, says “the course is so exciting and the best for journalism students, as it offers a modern effective way of sending a message to the audience.”

“In addition to expanding our horizons, the course provides us with a glimpse of how we can change the society through communications” Ms Anderson explains.

Stockholm-based Kaggeholm College lecturer Mats Levander concurs with her, saying such kind of training exchange programmes went a long way in providing students with a multicultural understanding.

HMC has, in addition to Sweden, attracted students from African countries including Mozambique, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and Ethiopia, among others.

“We are grateful for our tailor-made ‘Communication with a Purpose’ to become a flagship course for export as it attracts several European and African students,” HMC principal Jackson Kaluzi says.

The HMC chief says they designed best courses in the wake of globalisation to enable their graduates to work anywhere in the world.

Indeed, a latest study shows over 90 per cent of the graduates HMC produces are fit for the job market across Africa.

In real terms, various organisations on the continent have recruited 92 per cent of HMC alumni in both media and leadership faculties.

“This implies that HMC graduates in both faculties are well groomed for the job market across the world,” stresses Jan-Erik Nyman, the director of IBRA Media for East, Central and Southern Africa.
